About Deb
Deb’s love affair with yoga began almost twenty years ago, the very first time she stepped onto a yoga mat. Since then, her yoga practice has remained her constant companion throughout the ups and downs of life. A trained psychotherapist and plant based chef & cooking teacher, her initial 200 hour Yoga Alliance accredited yoga teacher training in ashtanga yoga felt like an obvious addition, one that marries well with her other disciplines. Since then she has gone on to follow her other yoga passions to train in restorative yoga with Anna Ashby, hot/tapasya yoga with Kristen Campbell, Yin Yoga with Norman Blair & yoga for women/yoga for hormonal balance and yoga for menopause with Petra Coveney, a training for which she was handpicked. Deb remains one of the very few teachers in the world to hold certification in Menopause Yoga. Before lockdown she began a training in accessible yoga which she hopes to be able to continue soon. Deb has also completed over 50 hours of training in Trauma Resilience, Embodied Yoga and social impact, a training which underpins all of her teaching. All of Deb's trainings have been accredited through Yoga Alliance. She is a member of Yoga Alliance Professionals.
Deb’s other passions include pranayama/breath work as well as yoga philosophy for which she continues to study extensively. Having studied modern languages at University, she is very interested in Sanskrit which she hopes to complete a degree in just as soon as time permits! She believes passionately in yoga being made accessible for all, regardless of age, background, physical ability or religious/spiritual belief & encourages her students to listen to their own inner teacher. She feels she is merely the guide, there to hold the space for her students.
Deb is known for her warm, inclusive, non judgemental teaching style with good humour and lightness thrown in to the mix. With the appreciation that everything is ever in flux, always changing, and so she encourages in her students a desire to maintain openness and curiosity for what arises. She steers away from micromanaging her students and instead aims to empower her students to find what might be best for their own unique bodies; what may be the right alignment for one body may not be the best choice for another.
Deb’s background in psychotherapy and nutrition marry well with her passion for teaching yoga. She teaches mindful movement and breath work to help regulate difficult emotions such as anxiety & overwhelm, in order to reach a state of more grounded wellbeing. Her sessions provide invaluable space and dedicated time for her students to be with themselves away from any expectation or judgement.
Deb is ever grateful to all of her wonderful teachers along the way & especially to her beloved and inspirational Joyce McMiken, Ryan Spielman, Anna Ashby, Kristen Campbell, Petra Coveney, Norman Blair & Mina Hosokawa.
Ashtanga Yoga
This class is based on the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga tradition (from the classical teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois), linking breath and movement in a continuous flow to induce a natural state of meditation.
This dynamic sequence of postures is practiced with focused breathing and energy locks (bandhas) techniques, designed specifically to build internal heat, align the body and strengthen the nervous system, while cultivating a feeling of inner peace.
Slow Flow Yoga
This is a calming, fluid yet also strengthening class mixing vinyasa and hatha styles of yoga.
With longer holds & less linking of poses than in a traditional vinyasa class yet more flow than in a traditional hatha class. Focus is on breathe and mindful movement.
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa yoga is a flowing series of postures, usually involving standing and seated poses, balances and inversions. Each asana is linked to the next and guided by a steady breathing pattern. These classes are a good way to strengthen, stretch, breathe and move.
Restorative Yoga
Everyone regardless of yoga style or level can practise restorative yoga and experience its benefits. Restorative yoga provides an important balance that supports conscious relaxation, healing and rejuvenation, as well as promoting evenness of mind – one of the main goals of yoga practice.
Distinctive from other introspective practices, restorative yoga postures are usually supine and supported by props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks. The intent of the practice is to bring about a relaxation response, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest & digest, slowing down the nervous system to shift out of the ‘fright, flight or fight’ response.
Tapasya/Hot Yoga
Traditionally practised in a heated room, ideally under very healing far infrared panels, this is a very nurturing static hatha style sequence that builds strength & wellbeing.
Yoga for Women
While Deb welcomes all to her classes, she felt that many women were looking for a space whereby they could practise in a sangha of other women. These classes often include a women’s circle, a chance to come together and share if wanted (but never pressure to share) and tend to include much more flowing fluid circular feminine movements. Open to all ages.
Yoga for Menopause
These classes are specially devised to support women on their menopause journey and beyond. From early peri menopause onwards, these classes aim to empower women, giving a toolkit of techniques to help them to manage the multitude of symptoms that can be experienced as a result of fluctuating and then diminishing hormone levels.Menopause yoga is underpinned by the teachings of Indian Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine and includes specially adapted asana poses along with breath work, mediation and mantra. Empowering, supportive and very nurturing.
Yin Yoga
The Yin practice involves long-held static postures.. It is a calming, grounding, releasing practice in which the poses are held under an umbrella of kindness, stillness, paying attention and self enquiry. Whereby restorative practice works before when reaches ones edge, yin yoga works close to and around one's edge but both are really important practices in calming and settling the nervous system, cultivating qualities of reflection and an opportunity to pause. It works as a deep release for the fascia which surrounds, envelops, connects and comprises most of the body. Like the rest of the body, fascia is vulnerable to injury and ageing and we need to move and stretch our fascia in all directions for optimal health. Yin yoga also works with the elements and meridians of Traditional Chinese medicine.
